To set up the challenge, use a piece of paper and two pencils. Divide the paper into four sections, label them with “Yes” and “No,” and carefully balance the pencils across the lines.

Ask Charlie simple yes-or-no questions and watch the pencils for an answer. When you are finished, ask Charlie if you can leave, wait for a “Yes,” then thank Charlie and remove the pencils.
